Rhythm Guitar Advice from Steve Barlow
Hey guys!
Steve Barlow is our Charleston Campus Worship Leader and a veteran rhythm electric player. He played in several bands when he lived in Nashville and was our go-to rhythm guy in Anderson for several years. He is a consummate professional musician and a fantastic leader. Here are his thoughts about executing great rhythm electric guitar work.
“I try to keep things a simple as possible, letting the amp do most of the work when it comes to tone. I usually get a good crunch with the master volume wide open that cleans up when the guitar’s volume is rolled back. If needed I may use a overdrive for big choruses and stuff. I try to listen to accents in the songs and follow them rhythmically; and I also try to make all transitions smooth when going from big parts to soft parts. The key phrase is “less is more.” Always listen to the lead guitar and keys stuff and make sure you are not walking on their parts. I usually try to learn a little of the lead parts just incase something happens or asked to I am prepared to play more than just rhythm.”
Thanks Steve!
